Lawes, Scheidegger, Walter set to fill wild-card spots for Scotties Event of Hearts


Groups skipped by Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes, Alberta’s Casey Scheidegger and Manitoba’s Meghan Walter seem set to fill the three wild-card positions on the Scotties Event of Hearts.

With all the provincial and territorial championships now full, they’re the highest three non-qualified groups on this week’s Canadian staff rankings.

Lawes is ranked fourth behind defending Scotties champion Kerri Einarson of Manitoba, Ontario’s Rachel Homan and Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones, who beat Walter within the provincial closing over the weekend.

British Columbia champion Clancy Grandy is in fifth spot forward of Scheidegger and Walter.

Curling Canada has but to formally announce the wild-card entries for the 18-team competitors scheduled for Feb. 17-26 in Kamloops, B.C.

In a Twitter submit late Monday, Group Lawes confirmed it might be Wild Card One and that Laura Walker can be a spare for the pregnant Selena Njegovan, who’s nearing her due date.
